Cornell Black Students United’s list of demands have been released online .
The six categories of demands are listed and explained in a seven page letter that was delivered to University President Elizabeth Garrett and Vice President Ryan Lombardi on Tuesday. Here is a summary of the demands:
1. Curriculum demands:
Mandatory, ongoing coursework for students and training for university employees on the topic of racial, religious, gender, etc. identity “explicitly focused on systems of power and privilege in the United States and centering the voices of oppressed people”
Hiring of a scholar in pre-European contact African history
Latino studies, American Indian studies, Asian-American studies majors
2. Compositional diversity demands:
Hiring more black faculty, administrators, staff; increased involvement in hiring process
Increase university contracts with women- and minority-owned businesses
3. Mental health and wellness demands:
Hiring at least three more psychologists and psychiatrists in next two years; at least three more physicians of color in next four years due to “mistrust” of of medical professionals
Support groups and spaces for people of color, women of color, and queer people of color in regards to sexual assault
4. Governance demands:
Meetings throughout the year with university president, vice president, ALANA student leaders, staff from office of diversity
5. Support services demands:
Space for multicultural Greek fraternities and sororities
Staff in each college career office dedicated to counseling students of color and other marginalized students; more full-time staff in diversity departments
6. Symbols demands:
Rename Cornell Plantations
Commemorations to the old Africana Center and Cornell students who lost their lives in the Civil Rights movement

And will they be taking over the Straight with guns if they don’t get what they want?
and Ho Plaza which is derogatory against female sex workers and therefore a part of the War On Women
Hey, are they gonna stop giving out _Master’s_ degrees? (Get it, get it–_master’s_ ?!?)
These people actually think there’s something wrong with the word “Plantations”–to designate an area of plants under cultivation… Aren’t such people too stupid to have been admitted to Cornell? (or am I missing something …?)
These are pathetic wannabes, imitating other students at Missou, Yale, Princeton, whatever. They seem not to have had the sense to allege some racist act here, to get all riled up about. Laughable.
“Plantations” — wow!
I agree with 6th amendment above in that has anyone started a petition to the administration to grow a back bone and to stop giving into domestic terrorists demands. The demands will never be satisfied until the school is totally changed and a lot of the students have moved elsewhere. Then once there is no longer diversity at the school the locusts will move on to the school where the other students have moved to and start start the racism, intolerence, hate, bullying (cry bullying) again. It is all about power and forcing others to give in to them and do what they want – and to make others admit mistakes that they may in no way (or their ancestors) have been involved.
In regards to their demands the 1st part of item one has merit. There does need to be some diversity training where students are made to be aware that everyone has rights no matter their color, religion, or ethnicity (that means everyone), free speech is important, and yes it is racist to by a cry bully and harp on other races in a negative fashion (just look at what happened with the crybullies abusing other students at Dartmouth).
Item 3 – more mental health facilities – well this is obvious why this should be expanded. Also all those who facilitated in the list should be put at the front of the line and signed up.
College administrations faced with these demand lists should consider responding by explaining that the cost of fulfillment of all these requests adds up to $2,500 per student per semester therefore tuition will increase by that amount. Any more demands?
What an absolute mockery of what is important and equitable in higher education! This is racism in and of itself!
