As of Tuesday evening, a university representative confirmed that incoming freshman athlete, Nate Panza, will not be a Cornell student, per a source from the Cornell Daily Sun.
Panza entered the national spotlight after a Twitter post was shared, showing him and other individuals using a racial slur whilst appearing either under-the-influence or sleep-deprived. As stated in previous reports, multiple students have petitioned on social media, calling for Panza’s removal. The Cornell Football team, for whom Panza was recruited to play, removed him, saying that his statements have no place in the Cornell Athletics community.
However, it was not clear until now whether Panza would be coming to Cornell University this fall. Prior to this announcement by the university, a student petition, “De-Densify Cornell’s Ithaca Campus By Expelling Nate Panza ‘24,” calling for Panza’s admission to be rescinded garnered 498 signatures on Change.org as of the publication time of this article. The Dyson School commented on Twitter stating that it was “looking into the situation.”
It is not clear at this time whether Panza voluntarily withdrew his application or if the University rescinded it. Also, an independent investigation into the context of the video has not been initiated.
