This weekend, the Cornell community was shocked and saddened by the announcement of several crimes, including the alleged drugging and subsequent sexual assault of at least 4 students. On November 7th, the Interfraternity Council (IFC), which oversees all Greek fraternities on campus, announced the suspension of all fraternity parties and social events, effective immediately.
This is the third suspension of fraternity events in 3 years. It comes just 3 years after the tragic hazing-related death of freshman student Antonio Tsialas and 2 years after the suspension of all fraternity activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The IFC’s announcement is a direct response to the alleged assaults that occurred over the weekend. On November 4th, CUAlerts broadcasted an email stating that “at least four incidents occurring between the dates of September 24, 2022 and November 3, 2022 in which students reported to have consumed little to no alcohol at an off-campus location but became incapacitated while attending parties.” Police believed these incidents involved Rohypnol, a powerful depressant commonly referred to as the “date-rape drug.” According to the email, all four incidents allegedly occurred at “800 block of University Avenue,” which is located close to the Theta Delta Chi Fraternity.
On November 6th, another incident occurred, prompting an emergency broadcast. The alleged incident of sexual assault occurred on the “100 block of Thurston Avenue.” It’s unclear whether the two incidents are related.
Cornellians on popular student forums such as the r/Cornell subreddit and Sidechat have expressed concern and anger at the attacks. While nearly all the comments expressed frustration, one commenter cautioned, “This pitchfork mentality on Reddit before knowing any details is just super dangerous.” Others raise concerns about specific fraternities and broader “rape culture” at Cornell.
A statement cosigned by President Martha and Vice President Ryan Lombardi echoed the sentiments felt by students:
Like you, we are outraged and saddened by the Cornell University Police Department (CUPD) crime alerts issued this weekend alleging the drugging of at least four students, and sexual assault of another student. These incidents reportedly occurred at off-campus residences affiliated with registered fraternities. We strongly condemn the actions of all individuals responsible for these criminal violations.
The immediate result of these crimes is the suspension of all fraternity-related social events. It’s unclear when the suspensions will be lifted, the extent to which certain fraternities are involved, and how many perpetrators are involved. This is a developing story and the Review will provide additional coverage as more details are uncovered.
