The Student Assembly (SA) will convene at noon today in an unprecedented finals week session to debate its future leadership.
The posted agenda includes a report from the Office of Ethics, followed by “Considerations of Presidential Succession.” The meeting is scheduled for noon, to be two hours in length, and will be available by Zoom.
Last week, the SA removed its duly elected President, creating a vacancy. Patrick Kuehl ‘24 claims to be the next President under provisions of the SA’s charter while Claire Ting ‘25 claims the same office under provisions of the SA’s bylaws. A majority of the SA has signed a memo supporting Kuehl, while Ting published a Review column advocating for the matter to be decided by the Office of Ethics, a committee of seven undergraduates appointed by the outgoing SA.
The question of who the next president will be may come down to who can muster the most SA members to show up on the tail end of finals week. The SA’s session last Thursday was supposed to be the final meeting of the semester, but the leadership struggle called for yet another convocation.
Kuehl’s supporters circulated a letter on Friday demanding “that the Assembly … meet at the earliest possible convenience to affirm Patrick Kuehl’s succession.” The Office of Assemblies, Cornell’s bureaucracy for all shared governance bodies, has reportedly refused to resolve the succession dispute.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more details become available.
