Controversial author Christina Hoff Sommers will visit Cornell to speak to students on the topic of Education, the Sexes, and Feminism on Saturday. The talk will be a critique of how feminism has lost touch with reality, and possibilities to put it back on track. Whether you are female or male, conservative or liberal, this event will present you with an opportunity to hear a unique perspective on a relevant issue.
Cornell’s Network of Enlightened Women co-founder, Ali Smith, encourages students to attend.
“One thing I love about Christina Hoff Sommers is that she is just as much about being ‘for women’ as she is about being ‘for men.’ In her most recent article, Obama and the Women’s Lobby, she recognizes the education achievement gap between men and women and the growing problem of male academic underachievement. She’s an advocate of equity feminism, where men and women are teammates who equally try to build one another up, instead of being competitors who try to get their own gender ahead. She sees women’s issues as men’s issues and men’s issues as women’s issues. I think her talk will be very insightful into how we can improve the lives of both women AND men, by equally empowering each other’s gender.”
Sommers is a well-known author and professor who writes on feminism- particularly a critique of late-20th century feminism. Her most popular books include “Who Stole Feminism?: How Women Have Betrayed Women” and “The War Against Boys: How Misguided Feminism is Harming Our Young Men”. Summers speaks from a socially conservative, equity-feminist perspective.
The event will be in H.E.C. Auditorium, Goldwin Smith Hall Saturday, November 3rd at 5:30pm. Pizza will be provided. The event is sponsored by Cornell’s Network of Enlightened Women, Cornell Republicans, and The Intercollegiate Studies Institute.
