Apparently we missed out on this little jewel because of Fall Break. Ithaca College organized an event yesterday to bring attention to the issue of discrimination against gays. The rally was an effort to start a movement encouraged by a larger project, whose website displays videos like the uber-dramatized conversation between ‘Dan and Terry’ – freeze-framed below.
Obviously if people are being bullied and discriminated against that’s no good, but sometimes the over-emphasis of an over-stated problem prevents productive ‘dialogue’ (to use a favorite word) and shrouds the reality of situations. The example of last year’s program house funeral march comes to mind – the claims were completely off-base, arose misplaced anger, and distracted eyes while programs like Cornell Cinema and performing arts took major hits. Maybe if Cornell has an ‘it gets better’ rally for gays, fat kids, skinny kids, Blacks, Hispanics, short people, tall people, Muslims, Christians, Jews, nerds, disabled kids, and any recipient of bullying at some point in some place today, I’ll attend.
