Last night the Common Council voted unanimously to extend the deadline for removing the gorge fences by 10 weeks.
Based on this Ithaca Journal article, a couple of things are clear:
1) Several of the Council members voted for the extension to simply give more time for Cornell to draw up a “more permanent solution,” not because they actually think the fences are a good permanent solution.
2) It seems highly unlikely that the Council will vote for another extension once the ten weeks are up. Any permanent barriers will also have to be paid for by Cornell University.
3) The recent “barrier negotiation” did not factor greatly into the discussion about the fences.
The fact that the ten week extension is schedule for the summer months, when there are significantly fewer students around, probably made the Council less reluctant to approve its passage.
