Melodies for Moms is a charity event hosted by Cornell’s Mountains for Moms, a club that works with Operation Fistula to raise money for obstetric fistula surgeries for women in poor communities across Africa. The event will occur at 10 pm on Thursday, March 5 at The Nines restaurant in Collegetown, and will feature three Cornell A Cappella groups and food and items for purchase. Entry to the event is $5.
The Facebook page for the event can be found here.
This past January, The Cornell Review’s very own Laura Gundersen led a group of 11 students for a fifteen-day trip in Tanzania, Africa, where they climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. The trip and climb is an annual event for Mountains for Moms, and represents the culmination of the year’s efforts to raise money and awareness about the cause.
Obstetric fistula is a disorder unique to child-bearing women in poor areas of the world who do not have adequate access to medical care (read more here). While obstetric fistula is both preventable and treatable, more than 99% of the millions of women who live with the condition will never receive treatment for it, according to Operation Fistula’s website.
Those interested in learning more about the Cornell group who went on the trip can go here.
I will be attending the event and I ask all of our readers to attend, too. For remember, private charity always triumphs government “charity.”
