Hundreds of students have joined in ongoing rallies around campus tonight, as the announcement of Osama Bin Laden’s death spreads across Ithaca.
With Americans celebrating the announcement throughout the country, the excitement has reached upstate New York. An estimated 100-150 students danced through the streets of Collegetown, chanting “USA! USA!” as they made their way to the Arts Quad. Others celebrated the news in large groups on North Campus by Mary Donlon Hall and throughout West Campus.
Cornellians in Collegetown donned American flags and red, white, and blue garb, chanting “Freedom!”, “Osama’s Dead!” and joined in several choruses of the national anthem outside Ruloff’s.
Other students walked or drove around the streets of Ithaca waving giant American flags, honking their horns, and blasting patriotic music. On West Campus, some students launched fireworks. Others did the same under Ezra’s footsteps on the arts quad, in response to the news.
Such gatherings have occurred as Americans continue to celebrate across the nation. College students in Washington D.C. are celebrating at the gates of the White House, with FOX News’ Geraldo Rivera calling for George Washington University to cancel finals on Monday.
“This is bigger than the moon landing!” Geraldo exclaimed amidst the crowds.
Meanwhile, social netorking sites have blown up with responses to the announcement. The Facebook page for “The Guy Who Killed Osama” has been liked by over 50,000 as of 2:00am. The page “Osama Bin Laden is DEAD” had been liked by over 250,000.
Such has been the scene throughout the country tonight, on a day that will help bring closure to all those affected by the Osama-led attacks on September 11, 2001.
